AI answer engine
An AI answer engine is a search system that responds to a question with a synthesized, conversational answer rather than a ranked list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude are answer engines: they recommend specific products and brands directly, citing sources they can read and trust.
In context
Answer engines change the economics of discovery. In classic search, position three still gets clicks; in an answer, you’re either recommended or you’re absent. The engine composes its recommendation from what it can read: crawlable pages, structured product data, reviews, and consistent brand information across the web.
For shopping queries, answer engines behave like a knowledgeable salesperson — they interpret intent (“something breathable for a Miami honeymoon”), then match it against product attributes. Catalogs that expose those attributes as semantic product data get matched; catalogs that are just titles and photos don’t.
