Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring a brand's products and content so generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity can understand, recommend, and cite them. Where SEO competes for a ranked link, GEO competes to be the answer itself.

In context

When a shopper asks ChatGPT “what should I wear to a beach wedding,” the model doesn’t return ten blue links. It synthesizes an answer — and recommends specific products and brands it can actually reason about. GEO is everything a brand does to be inside that answer: exposing structured, entity-rich product data, keeping AI crawlers un-blocked, publishing machine-readable summaries like llms.txt, and enriching product attributes so a model understands fit, style, and occasion, not just a product title.

GEO is often used interchangeably with Answer Engine Optimization (AEO); some teams also say GSO (Generative Search Optimization). All three describe the same discipline.

Why it matters for fashion & beauty

Fashion queries are intent-shaped (“something for a rooftop dinner that isn’t a dress”), and generic product feeds give a model nothing to reason about. Brands whose catalogs are legible get recommended; the rest are invisible — regardless of how well they rank in classic search. See AI search optimization for fashion & beauty brands for how Veristyle implements GEO end to end, and run the free AI visibility audit to see where your store stands.
